The Surgery department provides the following treatments and therapies.
Soft Tissue:
• Chest and Abdominal surgery
• Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)
• Portosystemic shunt
• Reconstructive surgery
Orthopedic:
• Fracture repair & Ilizarov Ring Fixation
• Hip Replacement & Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO)
• Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO)
• Arthroscopy
Neurosurgery:
• Myelograms
• Spinal Surgery
Dr. Bruns received his D.V.M. from the Ohio State University in 1992. He completed an internship at the University of Georgia and a surgical residency at The Ohio State University. In 1996, he was a staff surgeon at a small animal referral practice in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1997, Dr. Bruns became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgery. In 2001 he joined the surgical service at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care Center.
Dr. Kim Cox received her DVM degree from Texas A&M University in 1992. She completed a surgical internship at Dallas Veterinary Surgery Center and then went to Iowa State University for a small animal surgical residency. She was a clinical instructor at ISU's Veterinary College in 1996, and then spent a year as staff surgeon at a small animal referral practice in Minneapolis. In 1999, Dr. Cox became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and joined the surgical service at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care Center. Dr. Cox attended the Canine Rehabilitation Institute and became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) in 2006.
Dr. Matt Oakes received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Florida in 1989. He completed an internship and surgical residency at Louisiana State University in 1993. He then owned and operated a mobile referral surgery practice in Denver, Colorado. In 1994, Dr. Oakes became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and joined the surgical service at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care Center. Dr. Oakes has published numerous articles in veterinary journals and textbooks, and has lectured regularly at local and national veterinary meetings. Dr. Oakes performs a wide variety of orthopedic, soft tissue, and neurosurgical procedures.
Dr. Burns graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and a minor in Chemistry and is a 2006 graduate of the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She then completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at Tufts Cummings College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Burns completed her small animal surgery residency at The Ohio State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, where she also received a Master’s of Science Degree. In 2010 she joined the surgical service at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care Center.
Dr. Burns received the AVMA’s national Teaching Excellence Award in the Clinical Sciences in 2009 and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Teaching Excellence Award for Clinical Sciences in 2009 and 2010. Dr. Burns clinical interests include joint replacement, surgical oncology, and wound management.
